Manager, Flow Cytometry Facility

The Hospital for Sick Children

Description of the Position:

 

We require a manager for a major flow cytometry core facility that serves approximately 50 basic and clinical science research labs from the downtown Toronto Biomedical Research community.

 

Reporting to a Senior Scientist in the Research Institute, you will oversee the financial management and technical operations of this core facility, which provides cell sorting and analytical cytometry to researchers on a fee-for-service basis.  This facility currently houses 4 state of the art cell sorters (1 MoFlo, 2 Arias, and 1 Influx), and 5 analytical cytometers, with plans to acquire several new instruments in the next year.   The day-to-day maintenance and operation of these instruments is carried out by 4 trained full-time operators, who also train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyze their data off-line using custom software packages

 

The manager will oversee financial management of the Core Facility, including billing users for services rendered, managing supplies inventory and preparing yearly operating reports and revenue projections.  You will also coordinate installation and training for newly purchased instruments, develop specialized applications and SOPs for quality control and biohazard containment, implement procedures for tracking instrument performance, quality control and standardization, and oversee/implement online scheduling and data storage systems. Finally, you will develop workshops and other forums for Client education and also supervise the 4 FTE operators.

 

Qualifications:

 

Candidates must have significant theoretical and practical flow cytometry experience. Ideal candidates will have at least 2 year’s experience designing and executing flow cytometry experiments using analog analytical cytometers (such as the FACSCALIBUR) or preferably newer digital analytical flow cytometers (LSRII) and flow cytometric software (such as CellQuest, Diva and FlowJo.  Ideal candidates will also have at least 1 year’s experience operating older analog (such as the MoFlo) or newer digital cell sorters (such as the Diva or Aria).

 

Your educational background includes a PhD degree with at least 2 years post-PhD research experience, or an equivalent combination of specialized experience and certification in flow cytometry instrumentation and research applications. You have excellent organizational, communication, computer and problem solving skills as well as highly developed interpersonal skills gained from previous experience working in a research environment. Your flow cytometry experience and expertise should be reflected in co-authorships on peer-reviewed publications.

       Perform literature searches regarding use of the instrument and learn appropriate methodologies.  Will attend one national course, annually, to learn new techniques.

       Will utilize appropriate statistical and mathematical software for analysis and presentation of experimental data.  Will be sufficiently familiar with computer hardware to troubleshoot problems and obtain appropriate help when necessary.

       Oversee and coordinate the daily operation of the instruments.

     Maintain utilization and administrative records of the instruments.

 

Qualifications/Skills & Knowledge Requirement:

 

1.      Bachelor’s degree in biological/physical sciences with experience in a scientific research lab preferred.

This position entails providing a high level of technical service and

training within a flow cytometry research core facility.  This core

facility serves approximately 50 research labs in all disciplines of health

science research in the downtown Toronto Biomedical Research community.

 

Responsibilities:

 

To maintain and operate several analytical flow cytometers (including

2-laser,5-colour Beckman Coulter FC500, 4-colour BD FACSCALIBUR) for Core Facility. To train graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research technologists to operate the analytical instruments and to analyze their data off-line using Flow-Jo and other custom software packages. To operate FACS Aria cell sorters, which simultaneously use 3-lasers to excite up to 15 different fluorochromes.  Responsibilities include daily laser alignments, instrument calibration, fluidics and electronics checks and cross-beam fluorescence compensation.

Perform 2-way or 4-way high-speed sorting of a variety of cell   populations (sterile and non-sterile) for clients To accurately record clientś use of flow cytometry equipment and services 

for invoicing purposes Maintain user database.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum three (3) yearś experience with a variety of low cytometry

applications (2-8 colour immunofluorescence and multi-parameter

fluorescence compensation, cell cycle analysis, cell sorting)
